Welcome to Reception

Welcome to Reception, the first step in your child’s school journey. This is part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where learning is built around play, exploration, and discovery. Children learn best through practical, hands-on experiences, so our classroom is designed to stimulate curiosity and imagination. The focus is on developing early communication, language, and social skills, alongside building confidence and independence. Early literacy and numeracy are introduced in playful, engaging ways—through stories, songs, role-play, and problem-solving activities. Our superb outdoor learning space is also central to Reception, helping children to develop physically, explore nature, and learn collaboratively. Reception lays the foundations for a lifelong love of learning, preparing children for the transition into more formal learning in Year 1.

Development Map

Did you know that the first five years of your child’s life is the busiest time for them as their bodies and brains grow faster than at any other period in their lives? In Reception, we use Development Map, an online collaborative tool between home and school, to capture your child's important first year in school. In September, your class teacher will send you an invitation email to set up your Development Account, a user guide for which is below. This is for the Reception year only.
