Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1, the first year of Key Stage 1. This year marks the gradual move from the play-based learning of the EYFS into the more structured National Curriculum. Children build on the foundations laid in Reception, with a greater focus on developing early reading, writing, and maths skills. Phonics plays a central role in reading and spelling, while practical activities and problem-solving help to make maths meaningful. At the same time, creative subjects such as art, music, and drama remain important, ensuring that learning is exciting and engaging. Children also develop their enquiry skills through science and explore history and geography topics in ways that spark curiosity about the wider world. While Year 1 introduces more formal routines, the emphasis remains on nurturing each child’s confidence, independence, and love of learning. We carefully balance structure with opportunities for play, exploration, and practical investigation, so that the transition from Reception feels smooth and positive.
