Welcome to Year 3

Welcome to Year 3, the first year of Key Stage 2. This is an exciting step as children begin to develop greater independence in their learning. For the majority of pupils, there will be less focus on phonics and more emphasis on spelling rules, reading comprehension, and developing writing across a range of genres. In maths, children deepen their understanding of number, secure knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, and learn new facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. They also explore fractions, shape, and measurement in more depth. Science becomes increasingly practical, encouraging children to plan and carry out investigations. While there are no formal national tests in Year 3, children are assessed throughout the year to ensure they are making good progress in English and maths.
