Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is a year in which children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own learning, showing growing maturity and independence. They build on the knowledge gained in Lower Key Stage 2, while tackling more challenging concepts across the curriculum.
In English, children develop a greater awareness of audience and purpose in their writing, refine their grammar and punctuation, and read a wide range of texts with increasing fluency and insight. In maths, they extend their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages, and use formal written methods for calculation with larger numbers.
Science topics encourage enquiry and critical thinking, while history, geography, and RE give opportunities for research, discussion, and developing a deeper understanding of the world around them. Children also enjoy practical and creative activities, such as cooking, design technology, and art.
Although there is no statutory test at the end of Year 5, we regularly assess progress to ensure children are working at the expected level and are well-prepared for their final year of primary school.
