SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Sacrament of Reconciliation
In year 3 children prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation

God created us to love Him, to love one another and to love and care for all of His creation. We often fail to love, and we harm our relationship with God and with one another through our sins. The Sacrament of Reconciliation repairs our relationship with Jesus Christ and with His Church when we have damaged that relationship through our sin. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also known as the Sacrament of:

  •  Confession: because, in this Sacrament, we acknowledge our sins by telling (or confessing) our sins to a priest
  • Penance: because, in this Sacrament, we make an act of penance by doing something (perhaps saying a prayer or doing a little act of kindness) to show that we are sorry for our sins and that we intend to live our lives in a better way and more closely with Jesus

Our children who are preparing for First Reconciliation are on a journey with Jesus as their friend and guide. The Diocese of Leeds have developed a resource to help them on that journey. The resource is called Heart Speaks to Heart: the Gift of Reconciliation.

Sacrament of Holy Communion
In year 4 children prepare for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion

Holy Communion is the Sacrament in which Jesus gives Himself to us. In Holy Communion we receive His very Body and Blood. Receiving Communion is the most intimate way in which we can unite ourselves to Jesus, who offered His life for us on the cross. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is also known as:

  • The Eucharist: a word which means ‘thanksgiving’ and describes the thanks which we offer to God in Holy Communion
  • The Lord’s Supper: a term sometimes used to highlight the fact that Christ celebrated Communion at His Last Supper, before His death on the cross
  • The Mass: a term which derives from a word meaning ‘to send’ and describes our ‘sending out’ to do God’s work once we have received spiritual strength from Communion

Our children who are preparing for First Holy Communion are on a journey with Jesus as friend and guide. The Diocese of Leeds have developed a resource to help them on that journey. The resource is called Heart Speaks to Heart: the Gift of Holy Communion.

Sacrament of Confirmation
In year 6 children prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation

Confirmation is the Sacrament that completes Baptism. At Confirmation the gift of the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon us. Anyone who has freely decided to live a life as God’s child and asks for God’s Spirit under the signs of the laying on of hands and anointing with the Holy Oil of Sacred Chrism receives the strength to witness to God’s love both in word and in deed. The newly confirmed person is now a fully-fledged responsible member of the Church. Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church.

Our children preparing for Confirmation and their families are on a journey together, a journey with Jesus as friend and guide. The Diocese of Leeds have developed a resource to help you on that journey. The resource is called Empowered by the Spirit: the Gift of Confirmation. An important part of this Confirmation resource is for children to take time to learn and talk together with parents and carers: there will be suggested questions to answer, activities to do and topics to discuss. It’s also very important to be praying together as a family at home.
